Who We Are
Buncumbe County, NC
The Original Concept
Project Access was created by a group of physicians in Buncombe County, North Carolina. They came together out of necessity to solve an increasing problem: a lack of a comprehensive system of coordinated healthcare delivery for the uninsured.
These physicians developed a model for a “clinic without walls” that recruits and coordinates donated specialty care from physicians, hospitals, labs and other resources.
Appalachian Mountain Project Access
Meaningful Access To Healthcare
Our Passion
We are passionate about the individuals we serve and the communities of the Appalachian Highlands!
Our region suffers from some of the highest rates of heart disease, cancer, COPD, injury, stroke, suicide, and diabetes than anywhere else in the United States.
Every day, thousands of individuals throughout our region go without needed specialty medical care because the cost of care is a barrier too high to overcome. That's where Project Access steps in to help.
Our Approach
Appalachian Mountain Project Access started in 2007, inspired by the original Project Access model. Since then, we have been constantly evolving, always looking for the best ways to serve our communities.
Now, we provide a single point of contact for both patients and all the providers involved in their care.
At AMPA, we are all about finding solutions. We want to ensure qualified participants have access to the care they need.
How We Serve
We Help Individuals Gain Access to Specialty Medical Care
We coordinate donated specialty medical care for in need individuals who qualify for our services. AMPA provides access through our team of Specialty Care Coordinators and participating providers for little to no cost for the qualifying residents of our 21-county service area in the Appalachian Highlands.
Our participating community of hospitals, specialty providers and diagnostic centers have donated millions of dollars of specialty medical care, diagnostic services and medical procedures. In 2022, Project Access served 4,227 patients and provided $32,400 in appointment transportation and medical equipment.
Our Support
We are extremely grateful to the community of over 800 participating providers and practices that work together with AMPA to provide specialty medical care for the patients we serve. We have heard from countless patients, their families and our providers about lives saved and hope restored. They share their gratitude with our team every day.
Our Future
The healing power of medicine extends far beyond the confines of clinics and hospitals. It reaches into the lives of those in our region who are most vulnerable. We see what happens when families and their livelihoods are affected because they are unable to access the care they need. We cannot do this alone.
Our goal for the future is focused on growing our financial resources to ensure we can continue to serve the growing population throughout the communities of the Appalachian Highlands.
Our future relies on working together with you. Together, we can make a profound impact on the lives of those who need it most.
